Hibernation Somatics: Anticipating Spring

My snowy backyard. Pretty – but I want spring!

From looking at the calendar – the Spring Equinox isn’t too far away. I’m not feeling it quite yet, but I am searching for little signs to come out of that winter hibernation. In front of my house, there’s a little bulb trying to push its way up toward sunshine. I hope it makes it! I, too, feel like I am searching for sunlight and slooooooowly starting to make my way into the greater world again. This winter has held its specific challenges – we’ve had to stay inside a lot more because of the Pandemic, so we’ve been especially isolated from each other this year. A full year of this has challenged even the most hardened introverts (I speak from the heart there!). I often turn to an image of a seed in the soil during the winter to feel into my own body, in anticipation of the spring. My own Somatics practice turns even more inward and small, I explore smaller movements, and stay mostly in the center. I visualize myself as that seed – how does it feel to get ready to grow? What part of the seed starts to move first? What’s it like to start to reach out to the sun, but also root down into the soil beneath? Seasons are cycles – and so are our own internal processes, our external processes, our connections with others, and even our connection with work, effort, & exercise. Let’s be gentle in this precious time before spring – test the waters of your own growth to the greatly anticipated sunshine to come soon.

The days are getting a little longer, and green is starting to peek out from the dirt of the Earth. We are starting to come out of our internal hibernation in anticipation of spring! We’ll be starting up our weekly Somatics classes again at a new time: Wednesday mornings at 9am EST. Here is a breakdown of what’s coming up in the next 4 weeks:

Week 1, February 24th: Breathing into the low back

Week 2, March 3rd: Breathing into the chest & shoulders

Week 3, March 10th: Breathing into the pelvis

Week 4, March 17th: Breathing into the waist

Somatics & Doors in Uncertain Times

Hello Dear Somas,

In these days of uncertainty – news updates change rapidly. We get a little bit of good news that gives us a sigh of relief, then a bunch of bad news that puts our bodies into stress and contraction. We are all flying blindly here – this is unprecedented in our collective history.

I’ve been dark for a while. I’ve been working quietly – redesigning, processing, finding my own way in this business of a Somatics practice. I never left, but I know I’ve been absent from actively putting my face out there. I feel the need to come out of my shell now, for my own sake and as a responsibility to offer care & compassion during this strange time. I am acutely aware of how important it is to have a self-care practice, and those of us who are trained to offer guidance for others are stepping up to support the increase in anxiety and fear.

There are many doors available to all of us to soothe our systems, boost us up, bring peace, and help us find ground even while the world around us is crazy. The more of us that can find even a little balance in our inner lives, the more the entire world can find clarity in our next steps.

I encourage you to find your own door to ground yourself – with a practitioner or on your own. For my part, I am offering half-hour somatics sessions online, at a sliding scale rate. We all are feeling uncertain about not only our health-futures, but our economic one as well. I do not want anyone to be without this door, and am available for private sessions and classes online. I am, in turn, seeking my own doors by reaching out to other practitioners online for my own self-care grounding. I sure do need it too in all of this!

I am also calling on other Somatics practitioners to join me online to offer live and recorded classes. There will be something available to everyone!

Reach out, email me at daysomatics@gmail.com or call/text at (828) 280-4252.

In love, good health and well-being,
Carrie

Happy December (and upcoming classes, videos, sessions)

I have a great class series coming up in January at Happy Body in Asheville. It’s one of my favorites: a 6-week Functional Somatics Series. Each week we will have an everyday movement as our topic (listed below). We’ll begin with an assessment of that movement, and then spend the class exploring how to improve that movement. We end each class returning back to that original movement, and see how it’s changed for us. I get really excited about these classes – it’s so much fun to see how everyone has changed after such simple and gentle movements. Below find more information on the series, and how to register.

I finally got around to making some videos:

After much procrastination, I have started a YouTube channel with video talks and some basic movement explorations. Check that out here.

Private Sessions

As always, I offer private sessions in my office at 25 Reed St in Biltmore Village, Asheville. If you’re in the Asheville area, I would love to meet you. More information about private sessions can be found here on my website.

Blessings to you and yours, and I look forward to seeing you next year.

Free Online Intro Classes

Happy Holidays and New Year! Hope it was all wonderful and bright for everyone, and 2016 brings health and prosperity to you and yours.

Starting in January, I will be offering free monthly intro classes online. These will last a half-hour, and be a video conference format. Following an introduction of how Hanna Somatic Education can help relieve pain and improve movement, I will guide participants through one movement exploration such as the Arch & Flatten.  Email me if you would like to join us, and I will send an access code for the meeting time. Make sure you have video capabilities on your computer, and enough room on the floor to move (for space about the size of a yoga mat).

January’s meetings will be Tuesday the 19th at 9am, and Wednesday the 27th at 8pm. (Times are EST).

Happy New Year!
